It is said that the King of Argos, Pheidonas, is the one who first invented the currency. The first coins according to this aspect were cut in Aegina in the 7th century B.C. Despite the above theory, according to Herodotus the Medias were the first to cut coins. The first currency was called Statiras and afterwards was replaced by Drachmas. The first coins were made by the ancient Greeks, of silver. Later on, silver was almost the only metal that was used for coins.
